Umuganura in the Nordics: Celebrating Harvest, Community and African Unity
The spirit of Umuganura came alive in Gävle as the Rwandan community, fellow African communities, families and friends gathered to celebrate Rwanda’s harvest festival in a joyful expression of unity, culture, friendship and gratitude.
The celebrations began on a high note with the East Africa Unity Cup, a football tournament bringing together teams representing the Rwandan, Somali, Burundian and Congolese communities in Gävle.
The tournament delivered an exciting series of matches, with Rwanda defeating Burundi 2–0, while Somalia secured a 6–0 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo. In a thrilling final, Rwanda emerged victorious after defeating Somalia 4–3, securing the East Africa Unity Cup.
Congratulations to the young Rwandan players in Gävle! Their talent, determination, teamwork and fighting spirit made the Rwandan community proud and provided a memorable sporting highlight to this year's Umuganura celebrations.
Yet, the day was about much more than football.
Rooted in the tradition of giving thanks for the harvest, Umuganura is an opportunity to celebrate abundance, strengthen bonds and come together as a community. Following the tournament, more than 100 players, families and community members gathered for a shared dinner and cultural celebration.
The gathering provided an opportunity to share the joy of the harvest, celebrate Rwandan heritage and create connections and friendships across African communities in Gävle. The celebration also reflected the importance of community associations and diaspora networks in preserving culture and bringing people together across generations.
The Embassy of Rwanda extends its heartfelt appreciation to the Rwandan community in Gävle, the organizers, players, coaches, families, supporters and all participating African communities for making this year's Umuganura celebration a memorable success.
The victory of the Rwandan team—and the strong spirit of togetherness demonstrated throughout the celebrations—was a beautiful reflection of the values at the heart of Umuganura: gratitude, solidarity, community and shared prosperity.
Other Communities
Beyond Gävle, Rwandans across the Nordic region also engaged in cultural and sporting activities that showcased Rwanda and strengthened community ties.
In Norway, Rwandan youth took part in Kulturarvsdagen, an annual cultural heritage event that brings together 150 participants and gives different communities the opportunity to present, preserve and share their cultural heritage with the wider Norwegian society.
In Denmark, Rwandan Community Abroad (RCA) Jutland participated in a cultural festival of 80 people, where they showcased Rwandan cuisine, culture and tourism.
In Finland, Team Rwanda, representing Rwandans living in the country, competed in the Helsinki African Cup Tournament, which brought together 100 participants. The team won the bronze medal, finishing in third place.
These initiatives reflect the energy of Rwandan communities across the Nordics in celebrating their heritage, building bridges with host communities and keeping Rwanda's culture alive.
