Rwandans in the Nordics Celebrate Umuganura 2025 in Oslo

The spirit of thanksgiving, unity, and cultural pride filled MEET Ullevål in Oslo on 16 August 2025, as more than 500 Rwandans from across the Nordics came together with Friends of Rwanda and members of the diplomatic corps to celebrate Umuganura, Rwanda’s National Harvest Day. Hosted by the Embassy of the Republic of Rwanda in Stockholm in collaboration with the Rwanda Community in Norway, the celebration brought together Rwandans of all generations to reflect on achievements, share aspirations, and reconnect with their roots.

The day opened with a Business and Investment Forum under the theme “From Harvest to Investment: Building Rwanda’s Future.” Here, the Rwanda Social Security Board (RSSB) engaged the Diaspora in conversations about long-term investment opportunities in Rwanda, including the Ejo Heza savings scheme and affordable housing initiatives. Their presence reminded participants that the harvest of Umuganura extends beyond culture; it is also about building sustainable futures and strengthening the bridge between the Diaspora and the homeland.

As the main Umuganura celebrations began, Master of Ceremonies Dr. Natacha Gatete welcomed the audience with reflections on the history and meaning of the day, reminding all that Umuganura is not only a time to give thanks for what has been achieved, but also to commit to working together towards the future. Each president of the Rwandan communities in Finland, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway then presented their communities’ Imihigo, outlining accomplishments over the past year and setting goals for the year ahead, an inspiring reminder that the spirit of collective responsibility transcends borders. In the spirit of Imihigo, Rwandans in attendance also committed to contributing for 300 Rwandans to join Ejo Heza and supporting 300 Rwandans with Mutuelle de Santé.

Culture and tradition were at the heart of the day. The Indahemuka-Finland cultural troupe travelled to Oslo to deliver unforgettable performances of Rwandan traditional dance, filling the hall with joy, pride, and nostalgia. Norway’s cultural troupe also graced the stage, showcasing their talent and adding to the spirit of unity and celebration. Young Rwandan artists from Sweden brought a contemporary touch with fresh performances, bridging tradition with modern creativity. The highlight of the evening was a powerful concert by Rwanda’s own sensation, The Ben, who had the crowd on their feet, singing along and celebrating their shared heritage.

In her keynote remarks, Ambassador Dr. Diane Gashumba captured the essence of the day, reminding participants that Umuganura is a time to be thankful for what has been achieved, but also a moment to reflect on what more can be done together as Rwandans, both at home and abroad. She praised the Diaspora’s dedication to unity, resilience, and national development, encouraging them to remain actively engaged in Rwanda’s journey forward.

The celebrations closed with a dinner and lively networking, leaving the sense of a renewed bond among Rwandans across the Nordics, strengthened by culture, shared achievements, and a vision for the future.
