Rwandan's living in Norway hold 29th Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi

Rwandans and their friends living in Norway commemorated the genocide against the Tutsi for the 29th time. It was an event organized by Urukundo Rwandan Organization, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Rwanda to the Nordic Countries.

The event's theme was “Remember-Unite-Renew,” calling for unity and a renewed commitment to preventing such atrocities in the future and was attended by many people from Norway, Sweden, Burundi, DRC, Tanzania, Kenya, Mali, Ghana, Ethiopia, Eritrea. The event featured a range of activities, including keynote speech, testimonies, a presentation on the Genocide against the Tutsi, and a cultural performance.

The opening remarks were delivered by keynote the Vice President of Urukundo Rwandan Organisation Mr.Claude Nduwayo followed by a song for the occasion by Sarah Camille Ramin Osmundsen, a Norwegian poet and writer.

A presentation was made by Mr Muhigana Felix, a Rwandan living in Norway on the historic context post-independence that paved the way to the genocide, a situation that culminated into the execution of the genocide against Tutsi, the deadliest in a short time of 100 days where rape was used as a genocide weapon.

Rwandan children and youth born after the genocide against the Tutsi performed messages in memory of the victims, conveyed messages of support to survivors and expressed their commitment to Never again drawn from education of love and unity they get from their parents.

The event observed a minute of silence for remembrance of the victims of the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda in 1994. This was followed by lighting candles, known as "Lighting the flame of Hope."

Ms Edissa Mihana, a survivor of genocide against the Tutsi gave a testimony of her painful surviving journey as a little seven-year-old.

The president of Urukundo Rwanda Organisation in Norway Ms. Marie-Chantal Muhigana held a speech in which she thanked RPF Inkotanyi to have stopped the genocide against the tutsi and explained the reasons behind the yearly commemoration of Genocide against the Tutsi- Kwibuka. She explained that the main reasons are to keep the memory of the victims, pay tribute to victims and support survivors, fight genocide denial and ideology, to make sure that justice is done, and to keep our determination alive: that life should go on, that our country will prevail, that future generations will live in peace.

The event concluded with closing remarks by the Ambassador of Rwanda to the Nordic countries, H.E. Amb. Dr. Diane Gashumba, where she encouraged the participants of the event to fight against all causes of genocide, emphasized the message of love and togetherness to build a better Rwanda.
